Betel nuts, also known as areca nuts, are the seeds of the Areca catechu palm tree, which is predominantly found in tropical regions of Asia, Africa, and the Pacific Islands. These nuts are often consumed by chewing, usually in combination with betel leaves, slaked lime, and other spices, forming the traditional "paan." Betel nut consumption has been deeply ingrained in the cultures of India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines. While it is enjoyed for its stimulating effects, betel nuts have also been linked to oral health issues when consumed in excess. Betel nuts are typically harvested, husked, and dried for various uses, including in both medicinal and recreational contexts.
